What’s a Distraction? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration uses the following definitions of things drivers are distracted by that contribute to motor vehicle crashes.
• Other occupants
• Moving objects in the vehicle, like pets or a dropped object
• Talking on the cell phone. including “hands-free” or a Bluetooth-enabied phone
• Dialing or text-messaging on the cellphone or wireless e-mail device
• Adjusting audio or climate controls
• Reaching for a device or object in the vehicle
• Eating, drinking or smoking • Daydreaming or not paying attention to the road
• Outside person, object or event like animals or a previous crash”
